Atalanta vs Man United 2-2 : Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Manchester United came from behind twice to tie 2-2 with Atalanta in a UEFA Champions League match on Tuesday night. Keeping them top of Champions League Group F.

The 36-year-old, equalized in first-half extra time, volleyed home from outside the box in added time to earn United a vital point in Bergamo.

At a raucous Gewiss Stadium, Josip Ilicic opened the score with a low attempt that slipped past David de Gea, and Atalanta felt Duvan Zapata’s 56th-minute shot had won it.

After Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team had been on the back foot for much of the first half, Ronaldo finished a fantastic move by blasting beyond goalkeeper Juan Musso for his first goal.

United were second best after the half as well, but Ronaldo, who scored late winners in the reverse fixture and against Villarreal, delivered with a crucial goal to retain United in first place moving into the remaining two group games.

At 2-1 down, United were third in the group and faced elimination if they lost to Villarreal in their next match, but a win would now see them through with one game to spare.

When centre-back Raphael Varane suffered an injury shortly after, Solskjaer abandoned the three-man defense in favor of bringing on forward Mason Greenwood, and it worked almost immediately as the substitute connected with Fernandes and Ronaldo in the breathtaking play that brought United level.

United’s defensive problems resurfaced, with Colombian Duván Zapata reclaiming the lead for the hosts after finding space behind Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly. Although the effort was first labeled as offside, a VAR review determined that it was a legitimate goal.

Atalanta appeared like they were going to extend their lead, but Ronaldo has become accustomed to bailing out his team in the Champions League.

His 127th goal in all competitions for United not only saw him overtake Solskjaer in the club’s scoring charts, but it also helped relieve pressure on his former teammate and now manager.

Following Villarreal’s 2-0 win over Young Boys on the same day, United and Villarreal are level at the top of the group on seven points.
