Dani Alves is scheduled to meet with Barcelona‘s top executives in January to explore a possible return to the club.

Although he is not yet retired, the 38-year-old left Sao Paulo in September due to an unpaid image rights dispute. He left Barça in 2016, but the club has struggled to find a suitable replacement ever since.

Sergi Roberto has frequently filled in at right-back since Alves’ departure, and Sergino Dest and Oscar Mingueza have also recently played there.

According to the Spanish publication AS, Dest may benefit from the move, with Alves serving as one of the best possible mentors for the young American.

Salary and contract terms will be discussed, with Alves aiming for a World Cup swan song with Brazil in 2022. He still plays for the Selecao, most recently in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Peru in September. He has 119 caps for his country after making his debut in 2006.

The transfer would also need to be approved by Xavi, the new manager of Barça. The two played together during the Catalan team’s better years, when they were consistently winning league titles and challenging for the Champions League.

Xavi’s debut game as head coach will be against Espanyol in a local derby.
