Serbia surprised Portugal on Sunday evening, coming from behind to win 2-1 late on at the Estadio da Luz, securing their place in next year’s World Cup in Qatar and sentencing their hosts to the playoffs.
Portugal went into Sunday’s match knowing that a draw would be enough to secure their place in Qatar next winter, and everything appeared to be going to plan when they took the lead just two minutes thanks to Renato Sanches.
But that was the best it got for Cristiano Ronaldo and colleagues, as the Manchester United forward had a quiet night in front of goal.
Dusan Tadic equalized for the visitors immediately after the half-hour mark, and the game was contested at both ends as each team pushed for a winner.

Late in the game, as the clock approached stoppage time, Mitrovic got on the end of a Tadic cross to head home a stunning winner, having missed a similar opportunity just seconds before. The Fulham forward was booked for his celebrations, but he didn’t seem to mind. Cristiano Ronaldo had an opportunity to equalize, but he fired far too high.
