TikTok overtakes Facebook messenger as the most downloaded app of 2020

According to a recent survey from digital analytics company App Annie, TikTok surpassed Facebook and Messenger to be the world’s most downloaded app in 2020.

The Chinese-owned video-sharing platform is the only non-Facebook app to enter the top five worldwide downloads list for 2020.

In China, TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, also owns the number one slot with the Chinese language video app Douyin.

Since the survey’s inception in 2018, Facebook-owned applications have kept the top rank in downloads.

The data compiled by Nikkei Asia from analytics platform App Annie shows that TikTok moved to the number one rank on the chart of the most downloaded apps worldwide in 2020 from its fourth position in 2019. Facebook, on the other hand, remained at the second position, but its messaging app — Facebook Messenger — moved from first to the fifth position.

WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger are the top five apps owned by Mark Zuckerberg.

Recall that TikTok was one of over 200 apps banned in India between June and September of last year.

Former President Donald Trump issued an executive order last year prohibiting new TikTok app downloads in the United States, claiming that TikTok posed a national security risk because the Chinese government had access to its user data, allegations that the company has denied.
